Wounded by the inevitable passing of time yet proud of its centuries-old history, Pedres Castle still standsâpartially toweringâatop its rocky perch, 140 meters above sea level and just a stoneâs throw from Olbia.
Built during the height of the Giudicato era, it served for nearly three centuries as the most important military and administrative stronghold in the area.
Within its walls paraded all the key players of Galluraâs medieval history: from the Visconti Judges who built it, to the Pisans, and finally the Aragonese.
At the height of its power, the fortress commanded respect with its imposing mass; from its strategically elevated position it could project its might all the way to the Gulf of Olbia. Four mighty towers connected by double walls gave it an authoritative air, while blocks of gleaming granite made it sparkle like a diamond in the sun. All around its rocky hill, a small grove of cork oaks formed a green and fragrant cloak.
Today, the castle still retains its original layout. Visitors can admire the single tall tower that has survived the centuries, along with various interior spaces such as rooms and water cisterns.
The summit is reached via a short and pleasant walk along an old path once used in times of war, when the site served as an air-raid lookout. And right at the start of the trail, you can visit another fascinating and evocative piece of history: the Giantsâ Tomb of Su Montâe SâAbe.
