To truly understand the Colostrai Lagoon (Stagno di Colostrai), you have to view it from above or walk along its edges, where salt crusts the soil and the fresh waters of the Flumendosa River meet the sea of Muravera. This isn't a glossy postcard setting, but a living, working landscape split right down the middle between raw wilderness and the traditional labors of local fishermen.
On one side lie the reed beds, dense mud, and shallow waters where pink flamingos pause to rest and herons hunt. On the other, a barrier of pines and golden dunes shields the lagoon from the open sea. Nets are still cast here to haul in the finest flathead mullet on the east coast—the very fish destined for top-tier bottarga—setting the daily rhythm of a traditional economy that has stood the test of time.
Step across the sandy ridge and you’ll find yourself on the endless expanse of Colostrai Beach, whipped by the wind and rarely crowded.
