Located in a position of absolute strategic prominence on the heights overlooking the northwestern extremity of the island of Sant'Antioco, Torre Canai has watched for centuries over the waters of the Gulf of Palmas and the maritime routes of southwestern Sardinia.
This imposing fortification was built in the 17th century, during Spanish rule, to protect the coasts from the incursions of Barbary pirates.
The structure is distinguished by its typical truncated-cone shape made of local stone blocks, designed to house an armed garrison equipped with artillery. Inside, the volume includes the armory room and the upper terrace, formerly used for smoke and fire signals that allowed the coastal towers to communicate rapidly with one another.
Surrounded by Mediterranean maquis sloping down toward the sea, Torre Canai today offers one of the most spectacular panoramas of Sulcis, combining the memories of lookouts and outposts with a naturalistic setting of extraordinary beauty.
