On the rugged volcanic slopes gently sloping toward the furrow of the Luzzanas stream, within the territory of Scano di Montiferro, the imposing monumental complex of the Nuracale nuraghe stands as one of the most fascinating, unique, and complex protohistoric fortifications in all of west-central Sardinia.
Unlike single-tower structures, the site is configured as a grandiose polylobed architecture, centered on a powerful central keep soaring majestically to a height of eleven meters, around which a rigorous quadrangular defensive system develops with cyclopean curtain walls and perimeter towers.
Around the main bastion, archaeological investigations have brought to light the extensive remains of a hut village and an outer wall, revealing an extraordinarily long-lived occupation of the site. Born and prospering in the height of the Bronze Age, life at Nuracale did not fade with the end of the Nuragic civilization, but continued across the centuries into the Roman and Byzantine eras, favored by the strategic position of absolute control over the ancient communication routes between the mountains of Montiferru and the coast.
Observing today the perfection of the large basalt boulders, the construction details, and the collapsed materials, among which blocks shaped with cavities stand out, means experiencing firsthand the engineering excellence and geopolitical vibrancy of a community capable of leaving an indelible mark in the ancient heart of Sardinia.
