In Torralba, immersed in the vegetation of the basaltic plain, the Su Crastu Covaccadu dolmen represents an essential and rugged megalithic testimony.
Less celebrated than the trachyte colossi, but fundamental for mapping the megalithism of the northern part of the island, this sepulcher showcases matter in its almost primordial state.
The structure consists of a series of uprights made of volcanic basalt arranged to delimit a rectangular chamber, upon which rests a heavy, unworked capstone. The dark and porous stone, chosen directly from the surrounding territory, gives the impression of having emerged spontaneously from the ground rather than having been built by human hands. There are no concessions to decoration or formal finishing: here, the functionality of the funerary chamber relies solely on the mass of the raw rock.
Su Crastu Covaccadu strikes for its ancestral adherence to the landscape. More than an isolated monument, the dolmen presents itself as a point of direct contact between the natural environment and the ritual gesture of Neolithic man, who harnessed the natural force of basalt to mark the space of memory and cult without altering its substance.
