Overlooking the edge of the basalt plateau that dominates the Tirso valley, the Iloi site represents one of the most emblematic and complete archaeological testimonies in all of Sardinia.
Its elevated position guaranteed in prehistoric times an unbeatable visual control over the entire surrounding territory, allowing easy surveillance of both pastures and transit points along the course of the river below. Today the area presents itself as a well-structured archaeological park that encloses in a single path the nuraghe, the Nuragic village, and the giants' tomb. The central fortress is distinguished by its multilobed plan made of dark basalt blocks, around which extend the stone foundations of the homes populated by the community during the Bronze Age. Not far away, the giants' tomb completes the entire complex, testifying to the deep bond between daily life, the defense of the territory, and the solemn funeral rites dedicated to the collective cult of the ancestors.
Walking through the various sectors of the Iloi archaeological park allows visitors to observe closely the extraordinary mastery with which the ancient Nuragic people knew how to organize and live in the space, uniting residential architecture, monuments dedicated to memory, and important strategic sighting points.
