A mountain of pure white sand that seems to spill straight into the blue of the Mediterranean—like a corner of the Sahara transplanted into southern Sardinia. The Dunes of Porto Pino (also known as Is Arenas Biancas), located in the territory of Teulada, are a breathtaking miniature desert: a striking landscape where hills of fine white quartz sand reach heights of up to thirty meters.
Walking through this setting evokes an almost unreal sense of immensity. The sand—soft as powder—is constantly reshaped by the Mistral wind, creating ever-changing shapes that stand out against the deep green of Aleppo pines and ancient white junipers (secolari ginepri coccoloni) rooted directly into the dune crests. At the base of this white giant, the sea displays crystal-clear shades ranging from emerald green to deep cobalt, over a gently sloping, shallow seabed.
This natural spectacle forms part of an extraordinary ecosystem: right behind the coastline lie the Mastaxi and Porto Pino lagoons, prime spots for sighting pink flamingos. Exploring the area also provides the perfect excuse to journey along the Sulcis coast—whether driving the spectacular panoramic road toward Capo Teulada, lounging on the beach of Tuerredda, or venturing inland through the vineyards that produce the region's famous Carignano wine.
