On the granite cliffs of Capo Testa, in the territory of Santa Teresa Gallura, the sea and history meet among the remains of the grandiose Cava Romana.
In this spectacular, wind-swept landscape, workers of the Roman Empire extracted enormous granite blocks and columns destined to travel the Mediterranean routes to decorate the palaces, temples, and monuments of ancient Rome.
Walking along the rocky ridges overlooking the water, one can still discover the clear signs of the ancient stonecutters' work. Columns only roughly hewn and never detached from the rocky matrix, regular cutting steps, and chisel grooves bear witness to the precision of Roman extraction techniques. Many artifacts left on-site tell stories of failed shipments or pieces abandoned due to minor imperfections, leaving the quarry exactly as it appeared two thousand years ago.
