At the foot of Mount Montalbo, on the border between Barbagia and Baronia, Lula preserves the strong and distinctive character typical of the Barbagia villages, surrounded by a landscape of limestone mountains, fragrant forests, and wild valleys.
Walking through the historic center, visitors encounter narrow streets, ancient stone houses, and glimpses of a Sardinia that still retains its most authentic and unspoiled identity.
The village also carries deep traces of its mining past. For decades, the mines of Sos Enathos, SâArghentaria, and Guzzurra shaped the life of the local community, leaving behind tunnels and industrial structures that are now part of the Sardinia Geomining Park routes. In recent years, Sos Enathos has returned to international attention thanks to its candidacy as a possible site for the Einstein Telescope, the major underground observatory dedicated to the study of gravitational waves.
Lula is also known for the Sanctuary of San Francesco, an important pilgrimage destination deeply rooted in local tradition, and for the trails leading into Mount Montalbo, offering spectacular views across one of the islandâs most fascinating mountain landscapes.
Here, the air still carries the genuine atmosphere of Sardinian mountain villages, where traditions, memory, and identity continue to live naturally in everyday life.
